Seven Ways to Ensure Success of New Initiatives


Starting something new can be exciting—a fresh initiative, a bold resolution, or a new way to serve your clients and community. But as many of us know, that initial enthusiasm can fizzle out if the foundation isn’t strong. True and lasting change requires more than good intentions; it often demands the hard work of unlearning old patterns before embracing the new, or dismantling outdated ways of doing things to rebuild in alignment with God’s purpose.


As leaders in our centers, we face unique challenges that require us to carefully examine not only what we want to achieve but also how we go about achieving it. This process of unlearning and rebuilding isn’t easy, but it is necessary if we want to see meaningful transformation that lasts.


Why Goals Often Fizzle

One reason resolutions and new initiatives fail is the tendency to layer the new over the old without addressing what needs to change. Another is setting goals driven by ambition, comparison, or someone else’s vision rather than seeking God’s guidance. By addressing these underlying issues, we can lay a foundation for success that is both effective and sustainable.


Practical Steps for Lasting Change

Here are some strategies to ensure your goals and resolutions don’t fizzle:


  1. Seek God First

    Before committing to a new goal or initiative, take it to the Lord in prayer. Ask for wisdom, clarity, and direction. Psalm 37:5 encourages us, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.”


  2. Identify What Needs to Be Unlearned

    Reflect on existing practices, mindsets, or systems that might hinder progress. Unlearning might involve releasing outdated workflows, dismantling unhealthy cultural norms, or rethinking how success is measured. Encourage your team to join in this evaluation process.


  3. Set Goals Rooted in God’s Purpose

    Avoid chasing goals born out of comparison, ambition, or pressure. Instead, ensure your goals align with the unique mission and calling of your center. Ask yourself:Does this reflect God’s vision for our ministry?


    Is this a response to His leading or external pressure?


  4. Build Accountability Structures

    Establish regular check-ins to track progress and adjust plans as needed. Accountability can come from your staff, board, or even a trusted peer in ministry. Open communication and honest feedback are essential.


  5. Create a Culture of Learning and Adaptation

    Foster an environment where change is embraced, and team members feel safe to explore new ideas. Provide training, encouragement, and resources to support the transition from old ways to new.


  6. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

    Recognize and celebrate milestones along the way, even if the ultimate goal feels far off. Philippians 3:13-14 reminds us to press on toward the goal, knowing that growth is a process.


  7. Equip Your Team for the Journey

    Provide the tools, training, and encouragement your team needs to succeed. When people feel prepared and supported, they’re more likely to embrace and sustain change.


A God-Centered Vision

Transformation is never easy, but it is always worth it when it is rooted in God’s will. As you step into new endeavors, remember the words of Isaiah 43:18-19: "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?”


Trust God to guide the process of unlearning and rebuilding, and lean on Him to sustain you through the challenges. When you align your goals with His purpose, you’ll find not only success but also the joy and peace that come from walking in step with His will.
