Renewed Mission: Reflecting and Setting Goals for A New Year

As the new year begins, it's a perfect time to pause and reflect on the past while setting the stage for the future. For center leaders, this is an opportunity to assess the progress that was made in 2024, celebrate the successes, and acknowledge the areas where growth is needed. The fresh start of a new year brings with it a renewed sense of purpose and energy, making it the ideal time to realign your efforts and reaffirm your commitment to the mission of life.

"But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." – Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

This verse reminds us that while it's important to reflect on the past, we should not dwell on it. Instead, we are called to learn, grow and move forward, focusing on the mission that lies ahead. God has equipped you for this task, and He has a purpose for your center in the new year.

Holding a Year-End Review & Reflection Meeting

To make the most of this time, gather your leadership team and staff for a meeting that will allow everyone to reflect on the past year and set goals for the coming one. Here’s a simple guide to help you lead this reflection process:

1.Prepare in Advance:

Encourage team members to reflect on their experiences over the past year. Have them write down a few thoughts on their personal and professional highlights, areas for improvement, and anything they feel has been missing in the center’s operations.

Gather any data that will help inform the discussion, such as appointment rates, volunteer retention, donor engagement, and campaign performance.

2.Celebrate Wins

Start the meeting by highlighting the center’s successes in 2024. Celebrate the number of women served, the growth in volunteer involvement, fundraising achievements, and any other milestones that align with your mission.

Allow each team member to share personal moments of success or encouragement. This could be a story of a client whose life was impacted, a volunteer who went above and beyond, or a team effort that made a significant difference.

3. Acknowledge and Learn from Challenges

Address the areas where things didn’t go as planned. This isn’t about assigning blame or pointing fingers, but rather about acknowledging the challenges and using them as opportunities to grow.

Ask the group questions like:

  • What were the biggest obstacles we faced?

  • Where did we fall short in meeting our goals?

  • What can we learn from these challenges to improve moving forward?

Encourage an open, honest conversation, emphasizing that mistakes and setbacks are part of the process and are an opportunity to improve and grow.

4.Set Goals for the New Year

Use the insights from your reflection meeting to set goals for 2025. Keep them SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) to ensure they are clear and actionable.

Consider setting goals in these key areas:

  • Client Services: Improving appointment booking & show rates, expanding outreach efforts, or increasing educational opportunities for clients.

  • Staff and Volunteer Development: Providing more training, enhancing communication, or creating a more supportive work environment.

  • Fundraising and Sustainability: Increasing donor engagement, diversifying funding sources, or planning for large-scale fundraising events.

  • Outreach and Awareness: Enhancing digital marketing efforts, building partnerships with other organizations, or improving community outreach.

5. Pray Together

Prayer is a vital part of your mission. Close the meeting with a time of prayer, asking God to guide your efforts in 2025 and to provide the strength and wisdom needed to carry out your work. Pray for wisdom in decision-making, perseverance through challenges, and favor in all that you do.

Scripture for Reflection:

"Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans." – Proverbs 16:3

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that as we commit our plans to the Lord, He will guide our steps and establish our work. In everything we do, we seek His wisdom and grace.
